In 1953, President Eisenhower declared all homosexuals as “sexual perverts” that were risks to national security. During the Cold War where paranoia was at an all-time high, his executive order discriminated against the LGBT community, terminating them from their positions as public servants. This moment in history was a major catalyst for the fight for LGBT rights and has continued to inspire activism today.
Josh Howard creates a very educational piece that reminds us about an awful period in American history. The Lavender Scare uses personal stories and interviews of people who were persecuted to help paint the picture of the gross injustices that were faced in that time, and unfortunately, continue to exist in society today. Be inspired by these LGBT activists who are paving the way for future generations. Celebrate their fortitude and never forget their struggles.
