Inside Out 2017: ‘The Ring Thing’ Review

The Ring Thing Movie

Not everyone believes in the institution of marriage, and that’s okay. But what happens when a lesbian couple are desperately in love with each other, but have different views about marriage and how marriage has affected the LGBT community? William Sullivan explores this topic in The Ring Thing, using his characters to tell this story in an unconventional way.

Sarah and Kristen struggle to find common ground with their views on marriage and commitment, so Sarah uses her experience as a documentarian to interview other same-sex couples about their relationships in order to help her understand her own views. In a very meta manner, all of these interviews are real interviews with real couples! I would have much rather watched Sarah’s fake documentary in real life. These personal stories are where this film shines and, unfortunately, Sarah and Kristen’s own relationship is significantly less interesting.
