Harold von Braunhut and Yolanda Signorelli worked together for forty years before Harold – a genius magician, scientist and inventor – passed away and left his iconic novelty toy in Yolanda’s care. Antonio’s Reaction: At the moment my favorite documentary at the 2026 SXSW. Now going into this documentary, I was expecting something like the Netflix series “The Toys that Made Us” about the history of sea monkeys and its creator. At the beginning we get all of that. We follow the widow of Harold Von Braunhut (The creator of the sea monkeys), Charlotte. She is going through a legal fight with the toy company that distributes the sea monkeys. She is fighting them over the royalties of the sea monkey sales. At the same time, she is going over the stuff of her deceased husband.
Everything in this documentary moves along as expected, then we explore Braunhut basement. I have to give a plethora of credit to the filmmakers for the big reveal in the movie. It is done like a slow burn thriller. As we enter the basement, The camera slowly focuses in all these different items in the basement. It felt to me like the scene in a thriller were the main character explores a person’s basement and you slowly realize the owner of the basement is the killer. Slowy I started noticing that there was something off about the stuff in the basement. We then get the full picture of the dark secret of the creator of the Sea Monkeys. I mean Wow!! I love when a documentary surprises with a turn like this one. It left me with my mouth agape. Now I don’t want to divulge much more; but Amazing Live Sea Monkeys is worth the watch. Especially If you want see a documentary that will surprise you.
