SxSW 2025 Reaction – NIGHT FIGHT

A documentary that I felt was slightly overlooked was NIGHT FIGHT at this year’s South By Southwest Film & TV Festival and I am was very happy to seek this one out!

About: It’s been seven years since I was followed by a vigilante down back roads in rural Canada. During that time, I have sought to document — at first, unwittingly — the emergence of the versions of myself that were born on that day and in the weeks and months afterward. Now, as I return to the town, I begin to wonder whether I want answers to my many questions or something else. “Night Fight” explores this secret life and the impossible task of sharing it with my young son.

“But he is dead. And he keeps returning. Then he is not dead. Then he is not dead. Yet, he is dead, but dead he comes knocking at my door.” – Adrienne Kennedy (1962)

Reaction: “But he is dead. And he keeps returning. Then he is not dead. Then he is not dead. Yet, he is dead, but dead he comes knocking at my door.” – Adrienne Kennedy (1962)

This quiet but observing investigative documentary has such a unique cinematic style in use of its narrative devise which uses some re-enactments and interviews with historians to paint a bigger picture of the society and race relations that exist in this part of the world. I loved how NIGHT FIGHT approached this with open arms with a protagonist who almost doesn’t exactly know what he is looking for, and I loved seeing all of the different perspectives on screen. Filmmaker (name here) films in widescreen with such an open and inviting approach that I hope will make more of a presence in documentary film festivals.
