Our Paul Gratton takes a look at the new Canadian horror feature Son Of Sara, now playing in limited release in Canada.
About: Son of Sara: Volume 1 is a 2025 Canadian horror film about a pregnant woman named Sara who experiences strange visions and sinister cravings, culminating in a bloody dinner party nightmare. Written and directed by Houston Bone, it stars Chloe Van Landschoot as Sara, alongside Tymika Tafari and Garrett Hnatiuk.
Shot in Owen Sound, this is a totally unoriginal but reasonably effective variation on the old Rosemary’s Baby storyline. A young woman, now in a solid lesbian relationship, decides to keep her baby after a meaningless one-night stand. She is in her ninth-month of pregnancy, but she experiences disturbing signs of foreboding: she craves raw meat and coughs up hair balls. At times, she has visions of a black figure with red eyes. A chance encounter on the street with the father of the baby results in a dinner invitation to come meet his mother. Inexplicably, she goes out to the remote farm house, a decidedly dumb move. Bone, in his second feature, keeps the film atmospheric on a small budget, and Chloe Von Landschoot does a solid job in the lead. The film is titled Son of Sara at the opening, but the words “Volume 1” are added on at the final credits, hinting that the open-ended and violent climax could lend itself to future satanic shenanigans. A sequel would of necessity have to be more original, as Polanski never made a sequel to Rosemary’s Baby (though others certainly tried of course). We’ll see.
