SxSW Reaction: THE WRATH OF BECKY

Part of the terrific Midnighters section programmed by Austin’s own Peter Hall, I got to see a VERY late night screening of the sequel THE WRATH OF BECKY and by late, I mean 8:15pm at the Stateside with the director in attendance.

ABOUT: After living off the grid for two years, Becky finds herself going toe to toe against Darryl, the leader of a fascist organization, on the eve of an organized attack.

JASON’S REACTION: Lulu Wilson (who I remember from OUIJA: ORIGIN OF EVIL) is outstanding here, repirisng her role as a no-nonsense girl who looks innocent on appearance but do NOT mess with her. An early scene with Becky in a diner where a man calls her “sweetheart” and her reaction is one of the highlights. Becky gets attacked, her foster mom is killed and her dog is stolen (JOHN WICK vibe here, of course) and they don’t realize that Becky really has her smarts on her, knows her way around some weapons and also how to hunt the hunted.

Even on a low budget this totally works with great tension. A lot of the characters make silly decisions but I also kind of like that in genre movies like this and I knew that was keeping my interest. Even Becky herself I think makes some boneheaded decisions but hey, she’s young. And she certainly knows her way around a bear trap.

This is a sequel to BECKY, unseen by me, but one that I eagerly want to track down. Wilson is also backed by a strong cast and mention must be given to Seann William Scott who gives a menacing performance as one of the leaders of the fascist group. This is the second of what I know will be a fun and VERY graphic series, especially with the kick-ass Becky taking no prisoners.
