July 28, 2016 – Toronto, Ontario – It was announced today that D Films Corp. has acquired exclusive Canadian rights in all media to the independent film Kicks. The film is the first feature directed by Justin Tipping, who has already received critical attention and several awards for his short films including Nani and Swimming in Air. Kicks premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival earlier this year where it took home the award for Best Cinematography in a U.S. Narrative Feature. The film will receive a Canadian theatrical release in September. Focus World holds U.S. rights.
Kicks tells the story of Brandon, a 15-year-old whose dream is a pair of fresh Air Jordans. Soon after he gets his hands on them, they’re stolen by a local hood, causing Brandon and his two friends go on a dangerous mission through Oakland to retrieve them.
Kicks is an accomplished first feature and will resonate with Canadian film lovers,” said Michael Robson, SVP of Acquisitions and Business Development for D Films. “The film boasts breakout performances from a mostly unknown cast and is a perfect complement to D Films’ roster of titles.” The deal was brokered by Michael Robson for D Films and Ryan Kampe on behalf of Visit Films.
