The Batman on 4k Blu Ray – Amazing Detail & Clarity on Home Video

One of the biggest theatrical hits of 2022 so far, THE BATMAN did get mixed reviews on its release. Seeing it again, I can kind of see some of the comments about the picture and its differences between other variations of all of the BATMAN movies. Matt Reeves’ take on the material is more dark and rained-in than even Christopher Nolan’s take from over a decade ago. Watching it all again, I was still completely immersed in the look and design of Reeves’ vision, which is yet another take on the Caped Crusader. More like a film noir, THE BATMAN has a terrific new cast and led by a great turn by Robert Pattinson.

Read my full review for a more through take on the picture, and my admiration for THE BATMAN certainly holds up, even though I totally understand the criticisms. Fortunately this did very well in its release and I sure hope to see more from these creators.

About the 4k Blu Ray:

This one is a stunner on disc. In Canada this is streaming on Crave in simple HD and while that too also looks solid, if you want a full on 4k digital presentation at the best it can get, get this disc into your library. I saw this in IMAX along with a regular 2D presentation in a properly masked, Cinemascope presentation and the latter was THE way to watch the movie. There was no IMAX-shot footage for THE BATMAN either so I recommended to people to seek out a good theatre that knows what they are doing.

Matt Reeves and his cinematographer Grieg Fraser shot this digitally, though with anamorphic film lenses to really give this a lived-in film appearance. There are a couple of moments where the digital look and latitude show but overall blacks are incredibly deep and strong throughout. The Dolby Atmos track is the usual loud, aggressive and surround-filled soundtrack that you would come to expect in the format. Overall this is a terrific presentation and exactly what the filmmakers were going for.

There are plenty of extras on the included Blu Ray and are listed here:

  • Looking for Vengeance (HD 4:57)

There is also a Digital Copy that redeems to 4k/HDR on Google Play. As always I recommend the Chromecast with Google TV as it will redeem in HD yet upgrade to 4k shortly after.
